A very brief description of Shogun Shogun were military dictators determined by heredity. The shogun era lasted from approximately 1192 to 1867. Shogun were technically rulers of Japan, although they were appointed by the Emperor in ceremony. A notable example of a shogun would be Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun.
