Antesignani Antesignani were a Post-Marian reform unit that were used for tactical improvisation in battle. They were trained to fight outside the heavy infantry's battle lines and were drafted from the elite of the legion. Often they were used as forward scouts, screens, or for counter-skirmishing, or cavalry support. The Antesignani were a flexible and well-rounded fighting force. Typical battle equipment was a gladius, light shield, and a couple of javelins.
