Slavery was officially outlawed in the US in December of 1865. . . Just close enough to the holidays. And this girl has wished for freedom as long as she could remember, working countless hours of the day for food that comes in small grains. She has struggled through so much, and she couldn't be more grateful to the lord for letting her liberty finally come. Happy Holidays! { Story }Young Katherine lowers herself on the chair, wiping the beads of sweat that had gathered round her temple with the back of her hand. Her eyes spotted a small red box lined with white ribbon at the corner of her room, and having no energy to speak of, she ignored it, much to the dismay of her curious mind. The cold had not yet come to Georgia, just a soft breeze that blew through the December air and through the thick and puffy curls of Katherine's hair, cooling her for just a second. The plantation was the closest one to Florida, which provided with warmer climate and bipolar weathers, which didn't help the slave's work, as no matter the skies (unless drastic) they had to labor through each and every hour of the day. The rays of the sun singed the already darkened skin, which had been dirtied with dirt and cotton stems from collecting tobacco and cotton, the two prime harvests of the year. Katherine looked out to her working brethren with dark brown eyes, closing her eyes as she began to sing a mellow tune, a fighting smile now kept on her face as she tapped her fingers in tune to what her mother had sung to her. "Go down Moses Way down in Egypt land Tell all pharaoes to Let my people go! When Israel was in Egypt land Let my people go! Oppressed so hard they could not stand Let my people go! So the God said: go down, Moses Way down in Egypt land Tell all pharaoes to Let my people go! " Her singing was haltered as she heard a cry of pain, eyelids snapping upwards. Her body spoke before her mind could, despite her fatigue, rushing out of the house and towards the direction of the yell. She froze as she saw the plantation owner sat atop a white stallion, a whip crackling through the air and towards her dear sister. The leathery rope smacked against her sibling's back, a red mark sliced through the skin. Tears fell on Katherine's cheeks, knowing she would be killed if she tried to save family, at all. She was weak and frail from labor, and the cuffs that held back her hands would do no good, along with the rope surrounding her neck, and deprived dry lips. A man ran in from the corner of her eye, gathering her sister in his arms, and yelling at the wealth atop a steed. "Haven't you heard?" He nearly spit as he screamed, looking about the crowd now looking at the scene with frightful eyes. "Heard what?!" The white man responded, the horse neighing with refusal to move any farther than he pushed. "We are free." The stranger cradling Katherine's dear sister, Lorraine, responded in a much calmer voice, a smile lining his lips as he looked to his fellow workers. "What are you talking about, fool?!" The wealth was at the edge of his anger, his fists clenching. "Abraham Lincoln has declared that slavery is now outlawed. In ALL states. We have liberty, you cannot hold us here any longer!" The man looked proud and defiant, a sparkle in his eyes. The fear that washed along the face of our owner was evident as he gazed upon our gathered community, stricken with the idea that his plantation would go to ruin. Before he answered, he rode off towards his luxurious home, the horse neighing as his lead was pulled forcibly. Tears cascaded from my eyes as the man placed my sister down on the ground, comforting her and assuring her our new life would be far batter than any life we had ever had in this plantation. I rushed to my cabin and nearly teared open the red box hurriedly, eager to gather my belongings so I could escape this wretched plantation. What I saw inside made me jump, startled by the red brightness that was contained. It was a hat, a bright red hat with white lining and a giant white ball of cotton at the bottom of it, and a small letter kept right next to it.. "The holidays are near, and with the holidays there should be cheer." Remember to give this skin a diamond if you liked it! ♥Be strong.
